History

Arthur "Artie" Maddicks i\wass the son of a dedicated scientist who was working to cure mutations and thus his disfigured and mute son. Believing he found success, Dr. Maddicks kidnapped the mutant known as the Beast in order to test the process, but only managed to revert the Beast's enhanced, blue-furred mutation to an earlier state. The Beast escaped, and Dr. Maddicks was later killed. Lost and alone, Artie was brought to live in the Morlock tunnels underneath Manhattan, and found Annalee, who became a mother figure for him and Leech. The young mutant known only as Leech was abandoned by his Morlock parents, and wandered the tunnels until being adopted by Annalee.

Annalee was killed by the mutant-murdering Marauders during the so-called Mutant Massacre, but Artie and Leech were saved by the Beast and his superhero team, X-Factor. The two were brought to X-Factor headquarters, since the team was then posing as mutant hunters in order to bring mutants to their training facility to better learn control over their powers. During this time with X-Factor, Artie and Leech met and shared several adventures with other young mutants, who at one point called themselves the X-Terminators when they saved Artie and Leech from child-stealing demons.

When the original X-Factor disbanded, Artie and Leech went to a private boarding school. There, they met another young mutant, Taki, a.k.a. Wiz Kid. The three shared several adventures together.

After they were captured by the mutant Marrow, who was leading a violent anti-human Morlock army, Artie and Leech were brought to the X-Men, and then to the Massachusetts Academy, which is where the other mutants known as Generation X were learning schoolwork and control over their powers.

During the brief time that Franklin Richards was at the Massachusetts Academy, Artie, Leech, and Franklin joined Howard the Duck and the being called Man-Thing on a dimension-hopping adventure to save the multiverse. Artie and Leech remained at the Massachusetts Academy for several months until the school was destroyed by Emma Frost's evil sister Adrienne Frost.

Leech was captured by mutants working on behalf of the latest Weapon X program. Unbeknownst to his captors, Leech was ultimately imprisoned in the mutant internment camp dubbed Neverland. Here, Leech was strapped to a giant high-tech device that broadcasted his nullifying mutant power over the entire camp, rendering all mutants within powerless. Artie's fate remains unrevealed.
