History
Jessica Jones was a normal woman until a car accident doused her with chemicals and put her into a coma. She had been a classmate of Peter Parker's and also developed a crush on Johnny Storm. Strangely enough, she emerged from her coma around the same time the Fantastic Four first encountered Galactus. The tremendous energies given off caused some type of reaction. Having recovered and discovering she had developed superhuman powers, she tried to become a super heroine, calling herself Jewel.
Jessica was not very successful as a hero, to say the least. While trying out her powers, she accidentally crash-landed on Scorpion (MacDonald Gargan), who was robbing a laundramat. This was enough to stun him so he could be apprehended.
Jessica was captured by the Purple Man and kept prisoner for 8 months, though never used for sexual means. She was eventually sent to attack Daredevil at wherever the "...costume frat boys hang out..." and kill anyone who got in the way, after a newspaper report angered Killgrave. Once Jessica was out of range of the pheromones produced by Killgrave, she became disoriented, though still focusing on her mission. She had been kept under his control for so long that it was all she knew how to do. She ended up attacking the Scarlet Witch because her costume was red. After hitting Scarlet Witch, she snapped out of Killgrave's control and ran, thinking the gathered Avengers and Defenders would attack. She was nearly killed by an attack from Vision and Iron Man. She declined the Avengers's invitation to join them as SHIELD liason, after several months of recovery, helped out of a coma by Jean Grey of the X-Men.
Still bitter about her experience, Jessica briefly became a hardened vigilante, calling herself Knightress. She soon retired as a super heroine and began a new career as a detective, specializing in superhero activity. Her willingness to take cases involving her former colleagues is not always well-received by the superhero community. She still assists other heroes from time to time and has a large number of contacts. Most recently she joined the staff of the The Daily Bugle as an investigative reporter for the Pulse supplement.
She also managed to find Spider-Woman (Mattie Franklin) when she disappeared. Mattie's evil boyfriend was keeping her drugged and, apparently, using her as a source of super-powered genetic material to create drug Mutant Growth Hormone.
After 'hooking up' with Luke Cage, Jessica became pregnant. She moved in with him and after some time Luke proposed. Jones quit her job with the Bugle after J. Jonah Jameson used the paper to smear the New Avengers. Jessica extracted payback from the incendiary editor by refusing the Bugle exclusive rights to cover her daughter's birth. She eventually gave birth to a since unnamed baby girl. After some serious thought Jessica decided to accept Luke's proposal and the two were married (by a priest with an uncanny resemblance to Stan Lee) Jessica Jones has retained her maiden name.
In Civil War, Jessica and Luke are confronted by Iron Man and Ms. Marvel, who urge them to register with the authorities under the provisions of the Superhuman Registration Act. When asked if they intend to sign up, neither actually says "no," though they make their intentions to defy the law very clear, with Luke going so far as to compare the Act to slavery.
In order to keep their child safe, Jessica travels with her to Canada, while Luke stays in their home in Harlem. Having eluded the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents dispatched to apprehend him, Luke Cage joins Captain America's "Secret Avengers." Despite the surrender of Captain America at the conclusion of the Civil War crossover, Cage remains underground as leader of the New Avengers.

Trivia
- It is rumoured that Bendis originally wanted to use Jessica Drew, but Marvel balked at using the character in an adult-oriented series, and so Bendis created Jones as a replacement. Bendis himself has strenuously denied this, but his increased use of Drew since his move to more mainstream Marvel titles casts doubt on this claim.
