History

Very little has been revealed about the Mighty Avengers. The initial team roster was revealed[1]. The team members of the book are:

  • Ares, Olympian God of War turned anti-hero. Chosen due to the team's described need for "a Thor" and "a Wolverine."
  • Black Widow, A former Russian spy and longtime ally of the Avengers. She was also one of Tony Stark's (Iron Man) many lovers.
  • Iron Man, Tony Stark, the original armored Avenger and founding member of the Avengers is also currently serving as the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D.
  • Ms. Marvel, former super-agent now trying to do her best to become a great super-hero. Iron Man has appointed her team leader.
  • The Sentry, superhero with a troubled past, and the "powerhouse" of the Mighty Avengers
  • Wasp, wealthy fashion icon and a founding member of the Avengers, able to shrink herself, growing "wasp" wings on her back in the process and fire power blasts of electricity from her hands.
  • Wonder Man, formal industrialist turned super heroic actor and stuntman.

The Mighty Avengers are first seen as a team[2] when they are shown as the New York branch of the Fifty States Initiative. However, Tony Stark says that while the Initiative covers each state, he intends the Mighty Avengers to serve the entire world. Further clarification will be needed to determine if the Mighty Avengers are part of the Initiative. The first mission the team went on was against the Mole Man and then a new Ultron. They were seen attacking the New Avengers[3]. More recently, the team teamed up with the Fantastic Four and the New Avengers to stave off the Hulk and his allies. So far, Iron Man, Ares, Ms. Marvel, and Wonder Man have been defeated. The Sentry is involved, even though he has not fought the Hulk. Black Widow and Wasp's roles in this are unknown.

Notes

An interview with series writer Brian Michael Bendis on the Word Balloon Podcast said that the roster revealed in Wizard is not entirely accurate. Bendis stated that some of the members shown on the promo image will be on the team, while others won't.

However, the pages of Mighty Avengers #1 feature the line-up shown in the promotional image. It is very possible this will change in the first few issues, given Bendis's statements.

Recently, preview art by Frank Cho has revealed two possible members of the team, Tigra and Yellowjacket. However, seeing as both characters were part of the Pro-Registration heroes during Civil War, they may merely be allies of the team or reserve members and not active team members.

Angel Medina stated at the Phoenix Cactus Comicon that he will be drawing the arc following Cho's and stated that it will be deal with a symbiote invasion. However, Joe Queseda has stated that Frank Cho is the artist on Mighty Avengers for the forseeable future, and Angel Medina will only be filling in for that one story arc.
